8vo, orig. cloth, bevelled edges, worn, text block detached. Front endpaper brittle and detached. Withdrawn from an institutional library. Fair. Presentation copy, inscribed by Mayo to John Symonds Udal (1848-1925), "as a token of long standing friendship and in recognition of his unflagging interest in Dorset Lore", dated 31 May 1919. With Udal's signature, "Inner Temple". Udal was a distinguished English lawyer, judge, folklorist and antiquary with a lifelong interest in the history, traditions and genealogy of Dorset. His principal historical work, "Dorsetshire Folk-Lore" (1922), remains an important contribution to the study of the county's customs and traditions. The association between Mayo and Udal brings together two of the leading authorities on Dorset history and antiquities of their generation.
