With the rare 'Illustrated Catalogue of British Land and Freshwater Shells' by H.J. Bellars (Minshull & Hughes, Chester, 1858, pp. vi, 7-30, 4 hand-col plates and hand-col. figure to title page, drawn and lithographed by the author) bound at rear of vol. 1.

Condition

3 vols, 8vo, cont. half-calf, raised bands to spines, gt tooling to compartments, leather title pieces, marbled edges; rubbed/lightly scuffed, short split to top of two joints. Minor foxing to plain plates. Bound by J. Quinton, Norwich, with their ticket to endpapers. Crest of John Henry Gurney [Jr.] to boards. Inscription from John Henry Gurney Sr (1819-1890) to his son. The Gurneys were an influential family of English Quakers who had a major influence on the development of Norwich. They established Gurney's bank in 1770, which merged into Barclays in 1896. John Henry Gurney Jr. (1848-1922) was an ornithologist, author of 'On the Misdeeds of the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)' (1887), and other ornithological works.
