Description:

First Edition. With hand-coloured engraved plates, mainly by W.A. Delamotte, C. Mathews and Isaac Russell. This work was first issued in parts from 1832, each with four plates and accompanying letterpress; each volume was also issued separately on completion, with a title page, dedication (Vols II-VI) and index. Vol. VI also contains extensive indexes. A replacement for the text leaf accompanying Plate 203 is bound following the index to Vol. VI; the original version is bound with the plate in Vol. III.

Stafleu 374; Nissen BBI 107

William Baxter (1787-1871), was a British botanist, curator of the Oxford Botanic Garden from 1813.

Condition

8vo, cont. half calf, rubbed, scuffed, some wear; spines darkened, with some surface crazing (possibly caused by past exposure to heat), title pieces to spines (one chipped, one missing); marbled boards, rubbed/scuffed. Some occasional spotting or offsetting. Neat, contemporary pencil annotations to lower margin of some plates, giving localities. Recent owner’s bookplates to all volumes; earlier bookplate to Vol. I. A good set.
