1st edition. No. 187 of 350 copies numbered and signed by the author. L. Hugh Newman (1909-1993) was one of the most distinguished butterfly farmers in the UK. His father, Leonard Newman, was an acknowledged entomologist, started Britain's first butterfly farm, in 1894 at Bexley, Kent, which in due course he passed on to his son. Hugh Newman provided researchers, collectors and garden lovers with butterflies. Among his clients was Winston Churchill, who periodically bought butterflies from his farm to release them in his garden at Chartwell. Newman was also an entomology writer and BBC radio presenter (Nature Parliament).
