First edition. Scarce. Bibliography of the library of the Koninklijk Zoölogisch Genootschap 'Natura Artis Magistra', Amsterdam. Artis Zoo was originally founded in 1838, along with a botanical garden and museum. The library (Artis Bibliotheek), is now part of the special collections department of the University of Amsterdam. This bibliography is an invaluable resource for booksellers, librarians, collectors, and those with an interest in the history of Dutch zoology.
Condition
Large 8vo (275x190mm), cont. half morocco, rubbed / lightly scuffed, raised bands to spine, gilt titles and central vertical band to alternate compartments; marbled edges and endpapers, short closed tears to top of gutter of front free endpaper and to margin of rear free endpaper. Good. Withdrawn from an institutional library, a few neat ink stamps. Also with ownership stamp of Prof. Dr. C. Giebel, Halle. Christoph Gottfried Andreas Giebel (1820-1881) was a German zoologist and palaeontologist. He was a professor of zoology at the University of Halle where he managed the zoology collections at the museum. He was an opponent of Darwinian evolution.
