Description:
With a Preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. This 'New Edition' is the first with all Thomson’s pen and ink illustrations printed with partial colour-tinting (MacMillan first published an edition with Thomson's uncoloured pen and ink illustrations in 1891, and the 1898 edition had previously included 40 of the illustrations printed in colour). Imprint to verso of title page reads: 'Reprinted with Coloured Illustrations October 1898. New Edition 1907.' This is also the first edition to feature the binding design by A.A. Turbayne (with his distinctive scarab monogram to lower outer quadrant of upper board).
Condition
8vo (197x130mm), publisher's original dark navy-blue cloth, front board and spine highly embellished with ornate, gilt-stamped symmetrical Art Nouveau design, all edges gilt. An attractive copy, exceptionally clean and vibrant, showing only very light rubbing to the extremities of the binding, bright gilt to upper board and spine. Internally clean, front endpapers slightly browned, but the text block remains otherwise in excellent, clean condition. Very good.
