Through the ages heathlands have been of importance as (semi)agricultural areas, hunting territories and various other uses by mankind. This diversity of usage has created a cultural diversity over the whole Atlantic area of Europe, from Portugal and Spain in the south to Norway in the north and from Germany in the east to Ireland in the west.
This book shows us both the diversity of use for heathlands throughout Europe and new insights into their ecology.
The central theme of the book is how to fund the maintenance of these heathlands. Is their future as commonland, or do other types of land ownership, utilising the revenues generated by the heathland ecosystem, offer better opportunities?
