Description:

First edition. Published in four parts. The completion of the work was prevented by the death of the author. The published section deals with the Limicolae (plovers and sandpipers). The work is renowned for its beautiful chromolithographs (printed by Wilhelm Greve, Berlin), chiefly made from originals designed by the author. The eggs of some American species which occur as visitors to Britain were drawn by J.L. Ridgway; a few plates and figures were executed from drawings by M. Horman-Fisher.

Nissen IVB, 741; Anker, 406; Freeman, 3069.

Condition

4to, cont. half morocco by J. Larkins, joints rubbed, head of spine chipped; raised bands to spines, gilt tooling to compartments, marbled boards, teg. Some occasional - foxing, but plates largely clean. An attractive copy.
