Description:
Text Spanish. An early contribution to South American protozoology, providing one of the first substantial surveys of the freshwater Protozoa of Chile. Izquierdo’s detailed study helped establish a baseline for the taxonomy and biogeography of the Chilean microscopic freshwater fauna and continues to be cited in later studies of Chilean and Patagonian protist diversity. Vicente Izquierdo Sanfuentes (1850-1926) was a distinguished Chilean physician, microscopist and naturalist who trained in Germany and became a leading academic at the University of Chile; he played an important role in introducing modern histology and cell biology into Chilean scientific and medical teaching.
