Description:
This book comprises nine essays on a variety of topics in hydrobiology. The first deals with the analysis of aquatic ecosystems in general, and with the prospects of constructing predictive models of their functioning. Different aspects of freshwater biology occupy the next four essays: an account of the ecology of temporary water-bodies and of their euphyllopod Crustacea; a review of recent research into the drifting of invertebrates in streams and rivers; a consideration of the often overlooked parasite communities of freshwater ecosystems, with particular reference to the Hampshire Avon; and a discussion of the evolution and ecological diversification of aquatic insects as revealed in the fossil record. The four remaining essays concern marine organisms: a review of studies on the biochemical composition of zooplankton; an investigation of the mechanisms by which various burrowing animals survive low oxygen levels in marine beaches; a discussion of incubation in the sedentary polychaete genus Spirorbis, and its zoogeographical significance; and an account of locomotion in Ctenophora.
