Description:
Text Chinese, scientific names in Latin. The Nandu River was historically called the Limu River. It is the largest river in Hainan Island, flowing directly into the Qiongzhou Strait. Originating from Nanfeng Mountain in the southern part of Nankai Township, Baisha Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province, its main stream diagonally traverses the central and northern parts of Hainan Island, flowing through Baisha, Qiongzhong, Danzhou, Chengmai, Tunchang, Ding'an, and Qiongshan cities and counties, finally emptying into the Qiongzhou Strait at Sanlian Community, Meilan District, Haikou City. It is 333.8 kilometres long with a total drop of 703 metres and a drainage area of 7033 square kilometres. The river system is well-developed, with a wide drainage area and abundant aquatic biological resources. Major tributaries include the Longzhou River, Datang River, and Yaozi River. According to the "Freshwater and Estuarine Fishes of Hainan Island," there are 87 species of freshwater fish in the Nandu River, including 79 native species and 8 introduced species. With climate change and increasing human disturbance, the fish fauna of the Nandu River is quietly changing. In recent years, with the continuous deepening of investigations, nearly 300 fish species have been counted in the Nandu River, including the most abundant species of Hainan endemic and rare and endangered fish in Hainan's rivers. To provide a more intuitive understanding of the current fish species in the Nandu River, this illustrated guide has been compiled.
