Guernsey Sentinel: The Remarkable Les Hanois Lighthouse

This work tells the story of Les Hanois Lighthouse which stands on Le Biseau, one of the dangerous Les Hanois rocks off the south-west coast of Guernsey. Built between 1860 and 1862, following repeated wrecks on the island's western approaches, it was an important development in Victorian lighthouse engineering. The 118 ft granite tower pioneered a system in which the masonry blocks were dovetailed together both horizontally and vertically, creating a strongly interlocked structure capable of withstanding heavy seas. The method was subsequently adopted in later offshore rock lighthouses.
