Description:

The Experiment Station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ was founded in 1895, to help plantation owners increase their yield of sugarcane. The journal was established in 1909, as a monthly publication ‘devoted to the sugar interests of Hawaii, and issued by the Experiment Station for circulation among the plantations of the Hawaiian Sugar Planter’s Association’. The journal was edited by a succession of Directors of the Association, including Charles Franklin Eckart (tenure 1901-1913); H.P. Agee (tenure 1913-1935); and Harold L. Lyon (tenure 1936-1947).

This remarkable and fascinating journal records through articles, photographs and illustrations, the activities of the increasing number of staff based at the Experiment Station, dedicated to recording and developing new techniques in all aspects of the horticulture, pest control, irrigation, fertilisation and processing of sugar cane. Over the years the entomology department at the Experiment Station grew in size, in recognition of the particular threat of insects to production. A team of notable entomological researchers was established, led a few years by the British entomologist Robert Cyril Layton Perkins (1866 -1955) who became well known for his work on the fauna of the islands of Hawaii and his pioneering research on the biological control of sugar cane pests and weeds. Occasional papers on wider natural history subjects are occasionally included.

Although focused on Hawaii, the journal also carried articles on sugar related subjects from producers around the world.
