4th edition. Text French. Henri Martin (1810-1883 ) was a French historian who devoted much of his life to the study of the history of France. Writing the monumental Histoire de France, which was first published in 15 volumes (1833-1836). This covered the early history of France upto the French Revolution of 1789. In this fourth edition (1858-61) Martin extended the coverage of the work, which was published in 16 volumes, plus a Table Analytique (Index), (1861-65). In 1869 he received a prize of 20,000 francs from the Institut de France for this important publication.
Condition
17 vols, 8vo, cont. qtr leather, marbled boards and endpapers, one volume not uniform. Includes the scarce Table Analytique (Index). Some light foxing. Only 5 of the 52 engravings called for are present, (frontispiece portrait of author to Vol. I; frontispiece + 3 plates to Vol. XVI). Vol. 16 is dated 1878.
