Description:

1st edition. Includes a portrait and Memoir of Baron de Geer and a Memoir of J. Swammerdam. Most plates illustrate praying mantids, stick insects, dragonflies, grasshoppers, etc. Plates numbered 1-35, 12*. 31 of the plates are hand coloured. Unusually, the engraved title and most of the plates are present in two states, coloured and uncoloured. A second uncoloured set of 32 of the 36 plates (without plates 3-5 and 33, which are never coloured) is also bound in. The coloured version of plates 12* and 35 are misnumbered 37* and 37 respectively (as noted in the Errata on p. xvi).

Condition

Sm. 8vo, orig. brown cloth, worn, rear joint split with narrow strip of cloth missing along edge of spine for three quarters of its length. Front hinge broken between half-title and portrait. Text block firm, plates clean.
