Description:
John Xavier Merriman (1841-1926), served as the final Prime Minister of the Cape Colony before the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910. Known for his liberal policies and his attempts at preventing the Anglo-Boer War, his correspondences and ideas are full of prophetic insights into the nature of South Africa, and the later issues the Union of South Africa would face.
