Description:

The work introduces a fascinating collection of letters from James Cossar Ewart (1851-1933), Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh, and others, to William Bernhardt Tegetmeier (1816-1912), natural history editor of ‘The Field’. The correspondence discusses the breeding of horses and telegony (the idea that the first sire to mate with a female would leave ‘his mark’ on any future progeny). Many of the letters concern Ewart’s project to mate a zebra stallion (Matopo) with mares of several horse breeds to confirm or disprove telegony.
