Description:
1st edition. Together with signed autograph letter from Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), headed 'Normal School of Science' and dated Dec. 8th 1881, to Canon William Parsons Warburton (1826-1919), tipped in at front of Vol. 1. Huxley was Dean of the Normal School of Science (later Royal College of Science from 1881-1885). Warburton was ordained in 1851, and from 1851 to 1881 he was an Inspector of Schools and then Inspector of Training Colleges for Mistresses. In this letter (which bears the blind stamp of the Science and Art Department South Kensington) Huxley invites the Canon to the Athenaeum Club to discuss Science teaching in Elementary Schools.

2 vols, 8vo, orig. maroon cloth, rebacked, retaining orig. slightly worn backstrips. Water stain to outer margin of plates to Vol. 2. Good set.
From the library of Prof. A.J.E. Cave, with his occasional marginal pencil annotations. Also with the signature of Sir Grafton Elliot Smith (1871-1937), to half-titles, one dated Cairo, 1900. Elliot Smith was an Australian-British anatomist, Egyptologist and a proponent of the hyperdiffusionist view of prehistory.
