Description:
This five-volume work was first published in French, in monthly parts between 1885 and 1906. This is the first complete English edition, which has been translated from the original French edition. The volumes are richly illustrated with 814 facsimile colour plates reproduced from the originals by P. De Pannemaeker, A. Goosens, and G. Severens. Each plate is accompanied by text that provides the scientific name of each species, together with the original Latin diagnosis, bibliographical references, a description of the plant, collection locality, distribution, and notes on cultivation.
Jean Jules Linden (1817-1898) was a botanist, explorer and horticulturist who travelled widely, particularly in Latin America, in search of new plant species. He specialised in orchids. On his return to Brussels he founded the famous plant nursery, L'Horticulture Internationale.
