Description:
William Watt Addison Phillips (1892-1981) was a tea and rubber planter in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). During the first world war he became a prisoner of war in Turkey and made use of this ‘enforced residence’ by undertaking Zoological study. Returning to Ceylon he undertook a major study of the mammals of the island. In the preface to this work, Martin A.C Hinton, Deputy Keeper of Zoology at the British Museum (Natural History) stated ‘ I have never read a systematic account of this kind with greater satisfaction’.
