Description:
Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India. Palaeontologia Indica, being figures and descriptions of the organic remains procured during the progress of the geological survey of India.
An early monograph on the fossil mammalian fauna of India, particularly the celebrated Tertiary deposits of the Siwalik Hills and the Narbada Valley. Describes and illustrates fossil teeth and other skeletal remains of extinct mammals, including rhinoceroses and other ungulates, with 7 lithographic plates. One of the earliest substantial palaeontological studies by Richard Lydekker (1849-1915), who joined the Geological Survey of India in 1874 and subsequently became one of the leading authorities on fossil vertebrates. His pioneering investigations of the rich Siwalik fossil fauna laid the foundations for much of his later systematic work, including the important catalogues of fossil mammals in the British Museum (Natural History).
The lithographic plates are by Rasick Lall Bose, apparently a Bengali lithographer active in India during the 1870s.
