On Dislocations and Fractures

1st edition. Originally published in 9 fascicules between 1858 and 1859, each consisting of 8 pages of letterpress (unpaginated) and 4 fine lithographic plates printed on grey paper. Joseph Maclise (c.1815-1880?) studied medicine at University College, London, and continued his anatomical studies in Paris at l'École Pratique, L'Hôpital le Pitié, and subsequently settled into medical practice in London. He produced a number of other anatomical works, including 'Comparative Osteology: being Morphological Studies to Demonstrate the Archetype Skeleton of Vertebrated Animals' (1847) and Surgical Anatomy (1851).

Between 1861 and 1863 he shared his home with his brother, Daniel, a renowned Victorian artist and a member of the Royal Academy. Joseph was also an accomplished draughtsman, and produced the illustrations for his own publications. The current work was intended ‘to give a demonstration of those facts which have been already described by Sir A. Cooper* and others, and of those also which have not’ (The British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review, 1858).

Condition

Imperial Fo., cont. cloth, blind stamped decorative border, gilt tile to front board, corners bumped, with some wear to cloth. Plates clean with occasional foxing to versos and page margins. Ex-libris inkstamp of J.R. Kirkup FRCS. Kirkup is a retired orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in the history of medicine and historical surgical instruments; he was honorary curator of the Hunterian Museum's instrument collection.
