The author notes 'It is somewhat remarkable that no really adequate figure of so well known an animal as the Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis, Linn) is to be found in any zoological publication'. This issue is corrected by the inclusion of an illustration finely lithographed by the Dutch zoological illustrator, Joseph Smit (1836-1929).
