Portrait of Elmbury is widely regarded as John Moore's masterpiece and the first volume of the Brensham Trilogy, followed by Brensham Village (1946) and The Blue Field (1948). Although the town is called "Elmbury" in the book, it is a lightly fictionalized portrait of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, where Moore grew up.
The book was published in 1945, just after the Second World War, but it looks back to the England of Moore's childhood and early adulthood, roughly from the years before the First World War through the interwar period.
