Description:

Text French. Archives de Zoologie Experimental et & Generale, Vol. 77. An important classical monograph on the Apostomatia, a highly specialized group of ciliates, many associated symbiotically or parasitically with crustaceans. The work provided a major synthesis of their morphology, cytology, behaviour, life histories, evolution and systematics, and became a foundation for subsequent study of the group. It is also notable for the authors’ use of silver-impregnation techniques to elucidate ciliary and cortical structures, methods that became influential in protozoological cytology. Édouard Chatton (1883-1947) was a distinguished French zoologist and protistologist, remembered particularly for introducing the distinction between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellular organization. André Michel Lwoff (1902-1994), initially Chatton’s pupil and collaborator in protozoology, later became a leading microbiologist and virologist and shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with François Jacob and Jacques Monod.
