An important work on the Astomata, a distinctive group of mouthless ciliates occurring principally as endosymbionts in the digestive tracts of annelid worms. Cépède provided one of the first comprehensive treatments of the group, combining anatomy, biology, host relationships, parasitic behaviour and systematics, and establishing a taxonomic framework upon which much subsequent work was based. Fine tinted lithographic plates.
