Description:

First edition. Considered among Brian Vesey-FitzGerald's most accomplished works of nature writing. Through a series of beautifully observed studies of the birds and mammals of an unnamed British estuary, including shelducks, otters, gulls and curlews, he creates a vivid portrait of one of Britain's richest wildlife habitats. It is illustrated throughout by the celebrated wildlife artist Charles F. Tunnicliffe, whose woodcut-style drawings perfectly complement Vesey-FitzGerald's lyrical prose.

Set on a thinly disguised south-coast English estuary, known in the book as "The Big Spit" or locally as "the Gob", the work was probably inspired by Pagham Harbour in Sussex, though the exact location was intentionally concealed by the Vesey-Fitzgerald.
