Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, Gardner collaborated with Gertrude Caton-Thompson on the celebrated investigations of Egypt's Faiyum Depression, combining geological, archaeological and environmental evidence to reconstruct prehistoric landscapes. In this publication she demonstrated how fossil freshwater molluscs could be used to interpret ancient lake environments and climatic change, an innovative approach that became fundamental to later Quaternary and geoarchaeological research. The work remains a landmark in the environmental study of prehistoric Egypt and is an important contribution to both malacology and the history of archaeological science.
