Volume 1 covers the Symphyta (Sawflies); Tenthredinidae, Cephidae. Jacques Ernest Edmond André (1844-1891) was an eminent French hymenopterologist. Formally a wine merchant, Edmond André later became an entomological bookseller and Natural History Agent. His principal work was the "Species des Hymenpteres d'Europe et d' Algerie", commenced in 1879, and continued with contributions by his brother Ernest Andre (1838-1911) and other Hymenopterists.
