Description:

First editons. Plates mounted allowing them to foldout. This work may be found with plates coloured or uncoloured. In this set most of the plates are uncoloured, but the 10 plates in Vol. II are partly hand-coloured. Vol. I lacks the index (pp. 325-332) and has a 6-page early typescript index bound in its place. This work published in seven volumes laid the foundation for all further systematic work on Diptera. Engraved and lithographic plates by the author. Rare. Johann Wilhelm Meigen (1764-1845) was a German entomologist, botanist and illustrator; preeminent dipterist and known as the father of European dipterology.

Evenhuis, N.L. 1997. Litteratura Taxonomica Dipterorum. Vol. II, p. 533.

Condition

7 vols, 8vo, uniformly bound in later cloth, leather title pieces, teg. Occasional browning and foxing. Last 2 leaves of Vol. VII torn and neatly repaired.
