Bookplate of English ornithologist and naturalist, James Edmund Harting (1841-1928). Harting edited The Zoologist from 1877-1896, and the Supplement is inscribed, 'To the Editor of the 'Zoologist'. There are several neat ink and pencil annotations to the text in Harting's hand (one initialled J.E.H.); to the blank recto of Keuleman's plate of the Black Redstart, he notes in pencil, 'The head of male too large, Legs too thick and clumsy!' Also with bookplate of Robert Washington Oates (1874-1958). Oates was a dedicated naturalist and book collector, and was instrumental in securing the home of Gilbert White as a permanent memorial to the naturalist and author. There he also established the Oates Memorial Museum and Library, which commemorated his cousin, Captain Lawrence Oates (1880-1912), a member of Scott's Antarctic Expedition, and his uncle Frank Oates (1840-1875).
