Description:

Sir John Bretland Farmer (1865-1944) was a British botanist and professor at the Royal College of Science, London. Farmer edited this work which aimed 'to place the necessary information in such a form as to be accessible to the teacher' and to be 'interesting to that considerable body of men and women who take a keen interest in the wonders of nature'. As stated by Peter J. Bowler (2009) Science for All: The Popularization of Science in Early Twentieth-Century 'the series offered surprisingly technical accounts of most areas within these areas of science'. Farmer was assisted by 'a staff of specialists', many of whom were eminent in their respective field, such as J. Arthur Thomson, Professor of Natural History, University of Aberdeen and W.P. Pycraft, Assistant in Charge of the Osteological Collections at the British Museum (Natural History).

A particularly charming aspect of the work, is that four volumes include a dissected plate - different layers can be folded back revealing the anatomy of the pigeon, the mussel, the tulip and pea pod.

Roy. 8vo, orig. dec. cloth. Small tear to head of one spine. Occasional light foxing. A few inoffensive small red ink marks to preliminary pages in Vol. 4. Good set.
