First edition. Colour plates by W.H. Riddell, 170 sketches by the author.
Condition
8vo, orig. green cloth, lightly rubbed to extremities, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Provenance: A desirable copy featuring a lengthy and evocative inscription to endpaper by Rear Admiral Hubert Lynes (1874-1942), noted ornithologist and explorer. Lynes, who accompanied the author Abel Chapman (1851-1929) on an expedition through the Sudan warmly recommends this book: 'written by my old friend Abel Chapman ... Full of fine and good sterling natural history, and I am sure you'll enjoy reading it.' He signs off with a charming note, dated July 1925: 'I'm off to Abyssinia the day after tomorrow'. This expedition was noted in IBIS Vol 66 (4), 1924 'Admiral Hubert Lynes is going this winter to visit Abyssinia, to collect the birds and solve some of the interesting problems in distribution'.
