A complete taxonomic revision of the 60 accepted species (including 14 varieties), 58 of which are illustrated by water-colour plates, many painted especially for this book. Morphology, anatomy and cytology are discussed, as well as the distribution, evolution and pollination of the genus. Hybridisation is also covered and there are extensive notes on cultivation by Joyce Stewart. A key is provided, enabling all 60 species to be identified. Species accounts include full description, botanical varieties, taxonomic relationships, important synonyms, misidentifications, citation of types and justification of any name changes. Geographical distribution is summarised and particular cultivation requirements are noted.
