An important monograph on Japanese Hydrozoa by Emperor Hirohito (1901-1989), the Shōwa Emperor of Japan, who was also an accomplished marine zoologist and specialist in hydroid taxonomy. Based largely on specimens collected during his long-term investigations of the exceptionally rich marine fauna of Sagami Bay, the work represents the culmination of several decades of research and was one of the Emperor's last scientific publications, completed in 1988 at the age of 86.
