1st edition. 48 hand-colored plates by Day & Haghe, Lithographers to the Queen. Jane Loudon [née Webb] (1807–1858) was an English writer on botany and magazine editor. She commenced her writing career at an early age, publishing her first volume 'Prose and Verse' in 1824. In 1827 she published anonymously The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century (1827), a pioneering work of science fiction that brought together political commentary, Egyptomania, and interest in technology. Later, Jane Loudon became a very successful natural history writer, publishing books on horticulture and botany. The present volume was the first in a much-reprinted series of informative illustrated books, and was followed by others about bulbs, greenhouse plants, and perennials.
