Description:
Illustrated by E.W. Tristram. 2nd edition. First published 1947. An attractive anthology celebrating the landscape, people, traditions and literature of the English Lake District, compiled by George Sommerville Sandilands (1889-1961). Drawing on prose and verse from a wide range of writers, Sandilands presents the Lakes through descriptions of its mountains, valleys, lakes, villages and inhabitants, combining literary responses to the landscape with accounts of local life, history and character. The colour illustrations are by Ernest William Tristram (1882-1952), artist, watercolourist and distinguished authority on English medieval wall painting. Tristram developed a particularly close connection with the Lake District during the Second World War and produced an extensive series of watercolours of the region.
