Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) a Belgian playwright and poet was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911, and was also a keen beekeeper. First published in 1901, The Life of the Bee combines detailed observations of bee behaviour with philosophical reflections. This illustrated edition features the artwork of Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957), celebrated for blending scientific accuracy with artistic beauty. The attractive decorative buckram binding is also designed by Detmold.

4to (280x230mm), orig. dec. cream cloth, lightly bumped to corner of rear board, edges uncut. Light foxing to edges of text block. Very good.
