First edition. Frederick Whitlock (1850-1953), was an English ornithologist and oologist. He started work as a bank cashier near Nottingham, and later fled to Australia after robbing the safe! Following his subsequent arrest and conviction in England, he returned to Western Australia, and is noted for his many expeditions to remote areas to study and collect birds and their eggs. He also wrote, The Birds of Derbyshire (1893).

8vo, cont. red half leather, pebbled cloth boards, gilt title to spine; worn, joints cracked, front board partly detached; endpapers browned. From a natural history society library, with bookplate and a few neat ink stamps to endpapers. Good.
