Description:

First edition. Rather scarce. Errata slip tipped in at title page. A fascinating booklet covering the natural history of the City of London, with a focus on the plants and animals that flourished in the post-war urban landscapes of bomb sites and rubble heaps. 104 acres of the City of London of a total of 393 acres were laid waste by incendiaries and bombs, creating new plant habitats. During the Second World War Lousley worked in London which gave him the chance to visit bombed sites and he went on to list species in the Square Mile. It led, in collaboration with Richard Fitter, to publication of this booklet, which in addition to notes on birds and insects, listed 269 wild flowers, grasses and ferns.
