Description:

Sixth edition. Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was an English entomologist and explorer, who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals (Batesian mimicry). Best known for his expedition to the Amazon with Alfred Russell Wallace in 1848, Bates returned to England in 1859 having sent back over 14,000 species (mostly insects), of which 8,000 were new to science. This is his account of his eleven years travelling and collecting in Brazil, widely regarded as among the finest narratives of natural history travels, and still highly readable today.

Condition

8vo, orig. green cloth, blind-stamped decorative border to both boards, gilt vignette to centre of front board, gilt title to spine. Very good.
