First editions, first impressions, with first-issue dust wrappers where present. Comprising: I. The Gathering Storm, 1948; II. Their Finest Hour, 1949; III. The Grand Alliance, 1950; IV. The Hinge of Fate, 1951; V. Closing the Ring, 1952; VI. Triumph and Tragedy, 1954.

A complete first edition set of Churchill's monumental history of the Second World War, written from the distinctive perspective of one of its principal participants. Drawing extensively upon his wartime papers, correspondence, memoranda and official documents, Churchill combines personal recollection with a detailed narrative of the political and military course of the conflict. The British edition incorporates revisions made following publication of the earlier American edition.

Condition

6 vols, 8vo, orig. black cloth, gilt lettering to spines. Some light marginal foxing, otherwise a good, sound set. Vol. I without dust wrapper. Dust wrappers to Vols II-IV and VI torn and chipped with some loss, that to Vol. VI with loss to spine; Vol. V dust wrapper present and in better condition. All surviving dust wrappers are unclipped and housed in removable protective sleeves. Inscription to endpaper of Vol. I.
