Description:
First edition. Alfred Williams (1877-1930) was an English poet and writer on rural and industrial life. Williams was self-taught man; he taught himself Latin and Greek in his spare time from his work in the Great Western Railway works in Swindon, principally as a hammer-man. In 1916 he volunteered for army service, and served from 1917 to 1919 in India, where he taught himself Sanskrit. Williams started writing poetry at the turn of the century, and by 1907 his poems were appearing in anthologies. He received the patronage of Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice (E. G. Petty-Fitzmaurice) and published several volumes of poetry. The present volume is considered his best poetry.
