William Jackson Bean (1863-1947) spent his career at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, eventually becoming Curator, and drew extensively on its living collections in compiling this work. First published in 1914 and subsequently revised and enlarged through numerous editions, this work became one of the principal works of reference for the identification, cultivation, history and nomenclature of trees and shrubs grown in the British Isles. Published posthumously, this edition incorporates revised and updated information and includes additional photographs by G. Atkinson, artist and photographer at Kew.
