Text English with Dutch Summary. Thesis. John Julius Angerstein (1735-1823) was a financier and philanthropist, born in St Petersburg he emigrated to England in about 1749. He acquired his wealth as a marine insurance underwriter and broker, and was a member of Lloyd's of London. He developed a large art collection including works by Rembrandt, Velázquez, Titian, Raphael, Correggio, and many others. On his death, many of these were purchased to form the nucleus of the National Gallery's collection.
