Description:
The 'Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft' (German Geological Society), was founded in Berlin in 1848, by a group of geologists, mineralogists and miners, headed by the palaeontologist Heinrich Ernst Beyrich (1815-1896); mining engineer and mineralogist Rudolf von Carnall (1804-1874); geologist and paleontologist Leopold von Buch (1774- 1853) and mineralogist Gustav Rose (1798-1873). The aim of the society was to promote geology and to make earth sciences popular in Germany. The society journal, Zeitschrift der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft, commenced publication in 1849. Contributors included the leading geologists of the day.
Condition
35 vols, 8vo, attractive uniformly bound in blue quarter leather, raised bands, marbled boards, edges and endpapers (free endpapers removed from a number of volumes). Over 400 plates, including coloured folding geological maps, and fine illustrations of fossils and minerals. Occasional light foxing to a few plates. Lacks plates X-XIV from vol 13; plate III from vol 18; plates XI-XII from Vol 20; plates XX-I from vol 21. From an institutional library with a few neat ink / withdrawn stamps. Good.
