Description:
Over 1,200 species of bees, classified in six families, have been described for South Africa. Most of these are small, inconspicuous insects that are of ecological significance. However, several big, hairy and colourful bees attract the attention of interested citizen scientists. These bees are often seen around the flowers they visit and are commonly mistaken for bumblebees, which do not occur in South Africa.
The primary aim of this book is to stimulate an interest in South Africa's big bees, which can only be achieved by learning to identify the various species. This book is a first step in getting to know the country's 58 big bees and encourages further study into this fascinating group of insects.
