Description:

As the common name “microcaddisfly” suggests, Hydroptilidae represents the smallest family in the order Trichoptera in terms of body size, with adults ranging from between 1.5 mm to usually no more than 5 mm in length. However, microcaddisflies are extremely diverse and display a wide array of ecological, morphological, and habitat diversity. In terms of species diversity, Hydroptilidae is the largest family in Trichoptera, with 76 genera containing over 2,600 known species found in all faunal regions of the world. In this catalog, more than 1,300 literature citations published through the end of 2020 were reviewed to include 2,665 currently recognized, valid species contained within Hydroptilidae. The closely-related family Ptilocolepidae and the genus Eutonella (incertae sedis) were also reviewed and are included. Information on the type locality, type depository, distribution by country, and other relevant information is included for each nominal species, while summary information on taxonomy, phylogeny, distribution, and biology are provided for each subfamily, tribe, and genus where known.
