Description:

A substantial working reference collection assembled by the British dipterist Kenneth G.V. Smith (1929-2017), comprising papers and offprints relating principally to the larvae and immature stages of British Diptera, 1895-c.1989, arranged in 23 cloth pamphlet boxes. The collection was compiled by Smith as the working reference library for his major publication, An Introduction to the Immature Stages of British Flies: Diptera Larvae, published in 1989 as part of the Royal Entomological Society's Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects.

Smith was a member of the Department of Entomology at the British Museum (Natural History) and a recognised authority on Diptera. The collection brings together nearly a century of literature on the immature stages of British flies, much of it scattered through specialist journals, society publications and separately issued papers.
