Description:

A substantial run of the first forty-five numbers of the Freshwater Biological Association's important Scientific Publications, lacking only Nos 6, 12 and 19. The collection consequently contains 42 of the 45 numbered publications from No. 1 to No. 45, together with eight Occasional Publications: Nos 1-5, 8, 10 and 12.

The series was established to provide authoritative practical works on British freshwater biology and became particularly important for its identification handbooks and keys. The present collection covers a wide range of freshwater organisms and ecological subjects, including aquatic Hemiptera, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Simuliidae and other Diptera, Trichoptera, freshwater fishes, triclads, leeches, bryozoans, desmids, diatoms and other groups, together with works on sampling, statistical methods and freshwater ecology.

Among the earlier publications are T.T. Macan's British Corixidae (No. 1, 1939), H.B.N. Hynes's work on the British Plecoptera (No. 2, 1940), and John Smart's The British Simuliidae (No. 9). Later volumes include D.E. Kimmins's key to the adult British Ephemeroptera (No. 15), T.T. Macan's works on British water bugs and Ephemeroptera, Lewis Davies's A Key to British Species of Simuliidae (No. 24), Peter S. Maitland's A Key to the Freshwater Fishes of the British Isles (No. 27), S.P. Mundy's A Key to the British and European Freshwater Bryozoans (No. 41), J.M. Edington and A.G. Hildrew's A Key to the Caseless Caddis Larvae of the British Isles (No. 43), H.G. Barber and E.Y. Haworth's guide to the diatom frustule (No. 44), and P.S. Cranston's A Key to the Larvae of the British Orthocladiinae (Chironomidae) (No. 45, 1982).

The accompanying Occasional Publications add bibliographical and ecological material, including Armitage, Furse and Wright's A Bibliography of Works for the Identification of Freshwater Invertebrates in the British Isles (Occasional Publication No. 5, 1979).

An unusually extensive working collection of the FBA identification literature, compiled by Roderick C. Fisher, containing virtually the complete sequence of the first forty-five Scientific Publications and particularly useful for freshwater entomology, limnology and British aquatic ecology.

Condition

All parts published until 1982. Set lacks 3 pts (Nos 6, 12 + 19); some pts in several editions; pts 1-5, 7-9 + 11 bound together; set also includes Occasional Publications 1-5, 8, 10 + 12. From the library of the naturalist Roderick C. Fisher, with his ownership signature to many of the volumes.
